Shea Butter Lavender Body Mousse

Since being a baldy babe (I totally just gave myself that title as I write this lol), one of the things I realized when I started on this alopecia journey of using more natural based products, that making my own was not hard, inexpensive and so much fun. Oh, and the smells omg amazing. One of the things I love to make is my own body mousse. I refer to it as a mouse because its fluffy and light literally like whip cream. I use no more than 4 ingredients but if I want to mix up the scents then I’ll combine no more than two essential oils. I have normal to dry skin so for me it’s important to use ingredients that will keep me hydrated without feeling like I’ve dipped myself in a bucket of Crisco.

The base for my body mouse consists of a butter, carrier oil and an essential oil. My butter of choice is shea butter, alternatively you can use cocoa butter or mango butter. Shea butter is naturally rich in vitamins like vitamin A, E, F, K, it has ant-inflammatory properties that helps to sooth irritation and has healing properties, great characteristics for those of us with alopecia. After a clean head-shave I apply it to my scalp and it keeps it moist, hydrated and soft and helps to reduce shaving bumps.

Next up is the carrier oil. When purchasing a carrier oil, look for cold-pressed because during the extraction process it doesn’t use chemical solvents or heat. Great options all of which I’ve used include jojoba oil, olive oil, avocado oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil and coconut oil. All of these are wonderful as they contain anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial properties, make excellent moisturizers and absorbs in the skin nicely.

Lastly is the essential oil. I like lavender oil for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It has a nice soothing fragrance that doesn’t overpower other ingredients. Play around with different essential oils to see which ones you like. I would suggest doing a patch test on a small area of your skin to make sure you don’t have a reaction. Some essential oils such as orange or lemon smell wonderful but can cause skin irritation especially when exposed to the sun so be mindful with your selection.

This mouse recipe uses only 4 ingredients and has a light soft scent. I apply this on damp skin. So, when you come out of the shower and you towel dry don’t dry your skin completely, this is the best time to apply the butter, so it melts into your skin. It’s also great for dry hands, especially if you have a job where you are constantly washing your hands. A little of this goes a long way so once you apply wait a few minutes before getting dressed.

Shea Butter Lavender Body Mousse

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Total time: 20-30 minutes

What you’ll need:

Hand Mixer

Small stainless-steel bowl

Double boiler or pot to sit the stainless-steel bowl in

Metal spoon


1/2 cup shea butter

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup grapeseed oil

10-15 drops lavender essential oil


1. Combine the shea butter, coconut oil and grapeseed oil into a stainless-steel bowl.

2. Bring about 2 cups of water to a boil. You just want to create a water bath to place the stainless-steel bowl in so the heat from the boiling water melts the butter and oils.

3. As the oil starts to melt gently stir. Once the butter and oils melt (about 5 minutes) remove from heat and place the bowl on a tea towel and place in the freezer for about 10 minutes. This will help to harden the mixture so you can blend it into a smooth mousse type consistency.

TIP: keep an eye on your mixture because it will harden quickly and I’ve mine in the freezer too long and it froze completely, and then I had to leave it on the counter to thaw.

4. Using a hand blender, start to whip, add in your lavender oil and continue to blend until smooth and creamy. Store in a glass mason jar.
